Lower Your Diner’s Electric Bill with LEDs

Running a diner in Columbus, you watch every penny. Food costs, labor, rent – it’s all going up. Then I got my electric bill: $1,400 for December. My partner almost had a heart attack.
The electrician pointed to the lighting. We had 82 halogen downlights in the dining area – 50 watts each. Plus the kitchen fluorescents, the neon sign, the parking lot lights.
“Halogens are basically little heaters,” he said. “And your AC has to work overtime to combat that heat.”
The math made me sick: Those 82 halogens alone were costing me $287/month just in electricity. Plus they burned out constantly – I was replacing 15-20 a month at $3 each.
The LED quote scared me: $2,800 to convert everything. But the utility offered 30% back in rebates. And the salesman showed me the tax deduction – Section 179D, something about energy efficiency.
We did it in phases:
Dining room first – biggest impact
Kitchen second
Exterior last
The dining room transformation was immediate. 82 halogens at 50 watts = 4,100 watts. The LED replacements at 7 watts each = 574 watts. We went from 4.1 kilowatts to 0.574 kilowawatts. Same light, better color (customers complimented how food looked).
First full month after phase one: Bill dropped $310. Just from the dining room.
By the time we finished everything:
Monthly electric bill: $740 (from $1,400)
Bulb replacement costs: Zero (from $60/month)
Kitchen stayed cooler – AC ran less
Food looked better in photos (important for Instagram)
The place just felt… cleaner
Total investment after rebates: $1,900. Payback: 6 months.
But here’s the real kicker: Our insurance agent saw we’d done fire-safe lighting and reduced our premium 5%. That’s another $1,200/year.
LEDs turned a nightmare expense into a competitive advantage. We lowered prices slightly (first diner in town to do so post-inflation), and business jumped 15%.
Other restaurant owners asked me if it was worth it. I show them my bills. Then I show them my Yelp reviews mentioning “great ambiance.” Then I show them my bank account.
In this business, 3% margins are good. LEDs gave me back 5%.
