No More Guest Complaints: Ensuring Your Vacation Rental’s Solar Lights Work in Winter

A dark, unlit path to your cabin or beach house is the #1 source of negative guest reviews in winter. You can’t be there to fix them, so your system needs to be bulletproof and simple.

Install “Set-and-Forget” Systems: At each key entry point (front door, hot tub, parking area), install a two-tier system. Tier 1: A hardwired, photocell-controlled LED wall sconce (guaranteed light). Tier 2: A high-quality, all-weather solar lantern or post light right beside it. The hardwired light is the workhorse; the solar light provides charm and backup. If the solar fails, the guest isn’t left in the dark.

Choose Lights with Non-Removable Batteries: Opt for solar lights with sealed, integrated lithium-ion batteries. This prevents guests from accidentally stealing the AAs or putting in non-rechargeable batteries that ruin the unit. Brands like Solpex or MAGGIFT offer good landlord-friendly options.

Leave Clear, One-Sentence Instructions: On your rental’s info sheet, add: “Outdoor lights are automatic. If they seem dim, please gently wipe snow or leaves off the top black panel.” This empowers guests to solve the most common issue themselves in 10 seconds.
