Hack Your Solar Lights for Better Winter Performance (A DIY Project)

If you’ve got a soldering iron and a “why not” attitude, let’s make those store-bought lights work better.

Project 1: The Battery Upgrade (Easy)
Crack open the light’s housing. Often, the battery compartment can fit a larger 18650 lithium-ion cell (the kind in old laptop batteries) with a little creative wiring and a basic TP4056 charging module. This triples the capacity. (Disclaimer: Do this at your own risk, ensure proper weatherproofing.)

Project 2: The Remote Panel Mod (Intermediate)
Desolder the tiny solar panel from a pathway light. Extend the wires with 22-gauge outdoor cable. Mount the original light housing where you want the glow, and run the wires to a new, larger 6V solar panel (from Amazon) you’ve placed in full sun. Instant 500% more charging power.

The Mentality: Stop thinking of them as finished products. Think of them as “bright LEDs with a free, weak charging circuit” that you can improve.
