How Bright is Bright Enough? Lumens for Home Security

You see “2000 lumens!” advertised everywhere. Here’s what that actually means for your home security:
Lumen reality check:
200-500 lumens: Pathway lighting, not security
600-1200 lumens: Good for small areas (doorway, porch)
1300-2000 lumens: Proper security coverage for driveways
2000+ lumens: Commercial-grade, may annoy neighbors
The coverage formula we use:
For every 100 square feet of area, you need approximately 1000 lumens for effective security lighting. A standard two-car driveway (600 sq ft) needs 6000 lumens total—achieved with 3 × 2000-lumen lights placed strategically.
Color temperature matters more than you think:
5000K (cool white): Maximum brightness perception, best for cameras
4000K (natural white): Good balance of brightness and comfort
3000K (warm white): Less glaring, better for residential areas
Our field finding: Warm white (3000K) lights actually provide better facial recognition at distance than harsh cool white, because they create less glare and shadow contrast.
Avoid the “stadium effect”: You don’t need your entire yard bright as day. You need focused illumination on entry points and paths. Think spotlight, not floodlight.
Pro installation tip: Angle lights downward at 45 degrees. This puts illumination where needed while minimizing light pollution and neighbor complaints.
